What to Pack (and What to Leave Behind) for Your Yoga Retreat

One of the questions I’m asked before every retreat is:
“What should I pack?”
People often imagine they need a suitcase full of yoga clothes, walking gear and “just in case” items. I completely understand because I used to do exactly the same.
When I first started going on yoga retreats, I packed far too much. I thought I’d need a different outfit every day, shoes for every occasion and enough extras to prepare for anything.
Then one retreat changed my thinking.
It involved three flights, a long transfer and plenty of moving between airports and accommodation. Carrying a heavy suitcase suddenly didn’t seem like such a great idea!
From that point on, I challenged myself to travel lighter. These days, I can often fit everything I need into one rucksack.
It’s quicker through airports, easier on transfers and, perhaps surprisingly, it makes the whole journey feel more relaxed before the retreat has even begun.
You’ll Wear Less Than You Think
One thing I’ve noticed from leading retreats is that almost everyone arrives with lots of lovely clothes.
By the second day, everyone’s wearing their favourite comfy yoga leggings, a cosy jumper in the evening and wondering why they packed so much!
That’s one of the lovely things about retreat life.
There’s no pressure to dress up.
Nobody is comparing outfits.
Everyone is there to move, rest, laugh, explore and simply enjoy being themselves.
My Best Packing Tip
If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably use far fewer clothes than you imagined.
A good rule of thumb is to pack so you can comfortably carry your own bag from the airport to your room.
Your future self will thank you when you’re moving through airports, hopping on transfers or heading up the occasional flight of stairs.
You’ll be surprised how little you actually need once you settle into retreat life.

More Than Packing Light
Travelling light isn’t just about fitting everything into a smaller bag.
It’s about arriving with a little less stress.
Less rushing.
Less worrying.
Less clutter.
Yoga retreats have a wonderful way of reminding us that we often need far less than we think.
So pack the things that help you feel comfortable, leave a little room in your bag, and come ready to enjoy the experience.
